Back in the 1920′s, Alfred M. Scales laid out lots, streets, two lakes & a golf course. This became the incorporated town of Hamilton Lakes. It wasn’t until 1957 that the town of Hamilton Lakes was annexed by the city of Greensboro. The property that was not included in the incorporation is managed by a very active voluntary neighborhood association: Hamilton Lakes & Parks, Inc.

Residents here enjoy Lake Hamilton, Lake Euphemia, Little Lake Euphemia, Jim King Pond, numerous walking trails, playgrounds & abundant wildlife. Also nestled within the Starmount neighborhood is the beautiful Starmount Forest Country Club.  Started in the 1930s, it covers approximately 150 acres & is one of Greensboro’s most prestigious clubs.

Locals often distinguish between old Starmount & new Starmount. The typical home in old Starmount is a classic brick ranch built in the ’50s or ’60s on a street lined with mature hardwoods & an abundance of dogwoods. Butterfly garden

Several years ago I lived in the pretty neighborhood of Lindley Park. One of the best perks was being within walking distance of the one & only Greensboro Arboretum.

The Greensboro Arboretum covers over 17 acres & features numerous plant collections and specialty gardens, including an alluring wildflower trail, a comprehensive rhododendron garden, a hydrophytic collection and two wonderful conifer gardens. Visitors can explore educational garden exhibits, such as the popular butterfly garden and the first-class rose collection. All this is displayed among picturesque gazebos, bubbling fountains, walking trails and resting benches.The extensive variety of plants makes this a great park for homeowners that are wanting to improve their landscaping & need inspiration!

This is the first in a series of posts on the amazing public parks of Greensboro, NC

Greensboro is a place where the grass really is greener. With over 80 miles of trails in both natural and urban settings, 170 parks and gardens that cover over 3,500 acres, it’s no wonder families relocate here from all over the country & world & never want to leave.

No, Greensboro was not named for being so green, but because of Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War general, who in 1781 played a major role in the colonists’ fight for independence at a battlefield called Guilford Courthouse which is now a NATIONAL park right here in the northwest section of our fair city.

We have also been fortunate to have since 1968,  a nonprofit, volunteer organization Greensboro Beautiful which partners with the City and citizens of Greensboro to conserve and enhance the beauty and ecology of our ecology.
